FG to create 42,234 jobs under SURE-P

Towards maintaining federal roads, the Federal Government will engage not less than 42,234 skilled and unskilled Nigerians. The jobs, being created via the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, have already begun with 10,000 workers in the phase one of the programme.

Giving the highlights in a statement on Tuesday, the convener, SURE-P FERMA Public Works, Dr. Ngozi Olojeme, who inspected some of the maintenance work being carried out along Abuja-Kaduna road, said about 5,000 youths had so far been engaged out of the 10,000 slated for the first phase.

She said, "The scheme will engage 42,234 various categories of workforce comprising skilled and unskilled Nigerians. The first phase, which is already ongoing, will absorb about 10,000 workers. Out of that number, about 5,000 have so far been engaged. Abuja-Kaduna road, which is 274 kilometres, will employ 680 workers of various skills level. This first phase is aimed at covering 4,132 kilometres of roads."

While commending FERMA for taking delivery of five motorised slashing machines for vegetation control on the median, she, however, cautioned against mechanising the whole process so as not to deny more youths employment.

She said, "The Federal Government's intention is not just to achieve less pothole presence on our roads but also to use the programme to give jobs to the youths. Our inspection so far revealed that some of the youths who were idle in the past have now been fully engaged. Idleness does not pay anybody. The SURE-P programme has come to rescue some Nigerian youths."

"Roads are actively being maintained in the phase one of the project. Nigerian roads were left in a deteriorating state to the extent that a lot of lives were being lost. FERMA is devoting its energy into road maintenance all over the country.

"Nigerian roads are getting better than they were in the past. They were death traps but today you will agree with me that the Federal Government is more committed to having better road network than it was in the past."
